Surry 4-H In-School Programming

Programs Available at All Schools in Surry

Character Counts – A character education program that encourages the six pillars of character (caring, respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness and citizenship).  This program also encourages good sportsmanship while participating in sports and other competitions.  This program is for youth in all grade levels.

Surry Elementary School

Water Wizard – a natural resources/environmental education program for 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders.  This program is provided in conjunction with the Peanut Soil and Water Conservation District.

Healthy Weights for Healthy Kids – a research based curriculum taught in conjunction with the Health classes to 1st,  and 2ndgraders.  These lessons include healthy foods, snacks, drinks, activities and lifestyles.

Farm Day – A field trip in the spring for 2nd graders sponsored by the Peanut Soil and Water Conservation District to promote agriculture and natural resources.

Beginning of Life – Embryology – This program teaches the growth and maturity of a chicken egg and chicks are hatched in the classroom.

L. P. Jackson Middle School

Healthy Weights for Healthy Kids – a research based curriculum taught in conjunction with the Health classes.  These lessons include healthy foods, snacks, drinks, activities and lifestyles.

Reality Store – An economics/decision making program that allows youth to role play a career and family (selected at random) within a budget.  This program is for 8th graders.

Health Rocks – This research-based curriculum is taught in conjunction with the Health classes.  This is a drug and alcohol prevention program.

Surry County High School

Senior Class General Assembly Field Trip – during this program, senior government students meet with their legislators, tour the Capital grounds and watch the legislative session.

Envirothon Team – Youth interested in environmental and natural resources topics meet in the spring to form a team for spring competitions.

Freshman Seminar – Your First Impression Workshop – Students learn how to speak from a podium, introduce speakers and themselves and conduct themselves during a banquet situation.  Instruction is provided on properly completing job applications, interviewing and properly obtaining references.  A final field trip to the Airfield 4-H Center for a mock interview and business luncheon if the culmination of this program.
